Social Media and Marriage

Is Social Media the new marriage minefield? Did you know that a third of all divorce filings contain the word “Facebook”? Social media and technology are not helping to decrease marital conflicts but in fact are magnifying troubling issues in marriages.

Ah social media...the new age of all things shiny and glossy. I remember my first experience on social media, my word, it posed a world where all things become possible with a click here, a scroll there and slowly but surely became the norm as we know it today.

Social media fortunately and unfortunately has become a part of the world we live in today. I remember the role social media played in my past relationships when I was dating. My word, that is indeed story for another day. But in a nutshell it was quite good...and I must add, it was also quite bad...

Fast forward into when I got married, I suddenly just had enough of this "social media age". I had a conversation with Will (Hubby) and we both had an intensive discussion on Social Media; Facebook to be precise. We discussed how it affected our past relationships individually and seemed to agree on the fact that it did bring with it some low points in our past relationships. We didn't want to bring it or indeed it's shadows into our young marriage at the time (the year was 2011, and we literally had just been married for a year).

And so we decided and agreed to get off Facebook for a while and see how we fare on without it. I was quite pleased with our discussion and so with a swift click I shut-down my Facebook account and with a smug satisfaction of a kitten that just had a sip of Waitrose organic milk, I closed the lid to my laptop.
